You made some pretty good points there glenn. The trailer of Leatherface was cheesy and typically New Line but still kinda fun. The movie at least attempted to move closer to the tone of the original after the camp second film but failed due to 'too many cooks.' And Hooper has had his faire share of failed projects, I still think The Funhouse is his best film to date. It lost it a little when the killer took his Frankenstein mask off but still very stylish.

For all its flaws, Leatherface was still far better than the sequel that followed.

The best thing about leatherface was the Excalibur trailer.
It has it's moments.
And just how many films did Tobe Hooper nearly direct. It's not like all his films bar TCM are bad. In fact most of them are good. And he did give teenage boys nearly two hours of a naked Matilda May in Lifeforce (the most bonkers big budget sci-fi epic ever), plus Robert Englund being folded to death by an industrial steam powered washing machine! I always think of Tobe Hooper as the Roky Erikson of horror.
