Why are Clowns so Scary on the Silver Screen?

Pennywise from Stephen King’s IT. Shivers the Clown from Fear of Clowns. 100 Tears. The Clown at Midnight. Killer Clowns From Outer Space. For decades, clowns – those merry mirth-filled folk that try to bring a smile to your face – have been used to scare people in movies. Large or small screen, big budget or small, clowns creep a lot of people out. Why is this? What makes them so terrifying? Now is your chance to tell us! Tell us in 500 words (or less) on what clowns have scared you in the movies, and why they scare you in general. Now this MUST be in your own words (no imdb, nor wikipedia). The contest will be judged by Filmmaker Kevin Kangas, creator of the FEAR OF CLOWNS movies.

Contest ends September 25th, 2009

Winner will be announced on the Smash or Trash site and will also be contacted by email. The winning entries will be posted on the Smash or Trash Indie Filmmaking website.


Fear of Clowns DVD– Director’s Cut: One woman’s most terrifying nightmare becomes a gruesome reality when the paintings she makes of bloodthirsty clowns begin to manifest themselves as horrifying true-life serial killers. Fear of Clowns 2 DVD – Director’s Cut: The leads from the first film are back in this action and gore-packed feature as a sleazy hospital orderly (Alonso) helps Shivers the Clown (Lassise) and his friends escape a mental institution. They come back to town to terrorize Lynn Blodgett (Reres) and it is once again up to Detective Peters (Lama) to take them out. Stars Jacky Reres, Mark Lassise, Johnny Alonso, Tom Proctor, Lars Stevens, Savannah Costello, Leanna Chamish, and Frank Lama. Directed by Kevin Kangas.

Fear of Clowns XL T-shirt: Cool one-color t-shirts from the movie of the same name. Depicts a silhouette of Shivers the Clown carrying balloon and the original tagline “Your Fear is Justified.”

The Contest Rules and How to Enter: Email your scared of movie clowns letter (500 words max) to Make sure your full name, email, contact information and mailing address is included. Note: participants can only enter one email per person. Contest is open to the following countries and continents: United States, Canada, Europe, Japan, Australia. Emails must be in English, and MUST be in your own words (no imdb, nor wikipedia). The contest will be judged by Filmmaker Kevin Kangas, creator of the FEAR OF CLOWNS movies.

Due to the nature of some of the content of these DVDs, all participants that enter the contest must be at least 17 years of age. Also, Smash or Trash staff and contributors are not eligible to enter the contest.

  1. Clown house was the creepiest clown movie ever with out of the dark in 2nd, stephen king’s it on 3rd and a clown at midnight at 4th. from then on all clown movies made have been just low budget money makers for them and time wasters for us.

  2. Sounds like a cool contest – I’ll enter it. Always have been curious to how good or bad the Fear of Clowns movies are.

  3. The clown doll in Poltergeist was freaky when I was a kid. I agree with Amanda on Clownhouse and Out of the Dark.

  4. Yes, the clowns in Clownhouse were the scariest for me as well. I also enjoyed The Clown at Midnight. Wish that would make it to DVD soon!

  7. I’m gonna have to go with the clowns in “Killer Klowns from Outerspace”. They traumatized me as a kid. And I had a clown that you could wind up and his head would rotate around and play music. Once I saw that movie it was a wrap.
