Honestly, I’m one of those lifelong horror fans that has seen Savini many, many times throughout my life and quite frankly there isn’t much beyond the old Fangoria Scream Greats VHS that stands out. He uses the same analogies be it “My Name is Jason” or whatever other documentary or featurette he pops up in (read: pays him to be in) over and over and over again (the hired assassin story for one – yawn). He is undeniably talented, but quite frankly he hates gore makeup, and has admitted as much when he was trying to hit the mainstream – bitched and moaned about the genre in one facet or another to simply forward his career, the loyal came back into his crosshairs when that dried up at the feet of the Ron Jeremy of the horror world (Night of the Living Dead remake? George should be ashamed to have blessed this production). I love Tom’s work, don’t get me wrong, the thrills over the years have been plenty – even the occasional “acting” appearance which do nothing but prove that makeup isn’t his first true love = he is, can do nothing to detract the artistry that man has, or the influence for that matter. Gore make-ups today owe most everything to him, from Maniac to Friday IV, The Burning to Day/Dawn of the Dead, his influence is undeniable, but the man hates us. Plain and simple, he’d rather be making the monster movies that Stan Winston excelled at then slap/dash gore flicks though Stan had his share of those as well, he’s not eternally “known” for them .

You’ve all heard stories about what a dick Savini is, lightly sprinkled with the loyal few who claim that “he’s an artist” and is entitled to some asinine outbursts at the people who pay his mortgage at one time or another. Well, I always thought it odd that Nicotero left his ass to start his own company much less win an Oscar and whatnot, not to mention Howard Berger, why not stand at Tom's side? That must have killed Savini. While Winston and Nicotero went on to successful studios of their own, Savini started a school… which can be seen in two ways, one that Savini wants to pass on the good work to a new generation or the second, that he’s got no Oscar but has the weight needed to milk his name eternal. My vote is for the latter. The artist rocks, but the man not-so-much.

Hey, I’m the first to yell out “TOOOOM!” when he shows up in a film, and for however long, but at the same time I can’t help but think what he would or could have done for the genre had he stuck to his guns and kept up the fight. Dick Smith wouldn’t have pulled this shit on his fans so why should he?
Sorry if I offended anyone, but fuck it, this needed to be said, I've seen "The Ripper" for Gawdsakes!
