Good write up on Exterminator. No offense but you got a major plot point wrong in Rolling Thunder. You wrote ” Soon his presence seems to have angered the lover and he is brutally beaten before his wife and son are murdered. ”

That’s not what happened. Some thugs found out about the silver dollars the town presented him and invaded his home to get it. When he wouldn’t comply they forced his hand down the garbage disposal, hence his killer hook! They shot his family and left him for dead. His revenge started after he got out of the hospital, but it had nothing to do with his wife’s lover, who actually ended up killing a few of the bad guys himself before he got gunned down.

The contrast of the SLOW pull of the machete across the soldier’s neck and the head falling away is what makes that opening scene so gruesome.

And I agree Ginty’s boring performance (and hair) is what doesn’t sell it for me. And of course the lack of real sadistic violence.

I’m really surprised Rolling Thunder hasn’t been released on DVD, it’s one of Tarantino’s favorites which is usually enough to get something back in print. I haven’t seen The Exterminator, but I have seen its sequel which is presumably otherwise unrelated.
