Deadline Hollywood is reporting Elijah Wood, Frodo from The Lord of the Rings films, has been cast as the lead in an indie film titled Maniac. Wood will play a serial killer who works with antique mannequins by day and stalks ladies by night. The killer is motivated to murder due to abuse he suffered from his mother when he was a child. Sounds a bit like William Lustig’s film, no?
Alexandre Aja and Gregory Lavasseur are handling the production on this Maniac while directing duties will go to Franck Khalfoun.
The words “remake”, “Joe Spinell”, and “William Lustig” do not appear in the article.

*heavy sigh* another remake, eh? and I really don’t see Elijah Wood as a Frank Zito. I really don’t,
oh god i hope not. i could go on and on about another hollywood bullshit remake but why waste my breath. its fuckin stupid, just another way to suck money from us and add another hollow clone to the world. nuff said.
Wow, Alexandre Aja attached to a horror remake? There’s a shock. Haute Tension aside, his output since then has been less than inspiring. Perhaps he should give up Hollywood and return to France; their film industry is excellent so he doesn’t need to whore himself to American studios.
elijah wood…good God, now I’m frightened…
This is most definitely a remake, his character’s name is Frank. Horror sites all around have been posting about this.
Christian, HAUTE TENSION is essentially a remake, since it so heavily rips off Dean Koontz’s novel, INTENSITY. And P2 is a pretty blatant ripoff of the movie LOWER LEVEL. So yeah, essentially all of his efforts are remakes.
Haute Tension was far from original, agreed, but everything he has made in the US has been straight up remakes. I guess he’ll never quite reach his potential.
I think it might work for two reason’s one its more of an underground slasher and two ejila Wood is very underrater as an actor and this would be good chance for him to go into that dark place.
I think Pirahna 3D was more like a belated sequel than a remake. It has very little in common with the original, wich when you think about has a lot in common with summer camp slasher films. Maybe the raft scene in The Burning is a knowing nod at it.
A Maniac remake is just going to be some sort of semi-classy looking psycho triller with the scalping stuff taken out for PC reasons or Taxi Driver-lite.
Please let this be a rumor…Elijah Wood!?!? I mean seriously Elijah Wood!?! Joe Spinell better be breakdancing in his grave over this crap. They can NEVER achieve the brillance that is Maniac..i am never too hard on remakes, but this one is sacred and they just fucked with the wrong hombre!. beyond lame.
HAUTE TENSION is one of the best horrors ever, with a superb ending – don’t be hating on the director – he has only been asked to direct it, if you’re going to moan about the film, ask the studio who decided to do MANIAC – which, I find quite boring and way over rated.
Nah I never liked the ending to Haute Tension, it was pretty weak. But the rest of the movie I thought was tense and well made, if not entirely original
I think the ending of Huate Tension is up there with Happy Birthday to Me. I like French Horror but the angst, well! Call me a cretin, but it tends to tickle me for some reason.
Do you know the scene in Peggy Sue Got Married when the poetic outsider reads his poem to Peggy and it becomes a diatribe about blood and poo, To me that’s French horror. So serious, I can’t take it seriously.
sounds more like DON’T GO IN THE HOUSE which used the mom plot more deeper and made before MANIAC.
