Bad Dreams/Visiting Hours DVD: The Skinny

At first the combination of Bad Dreams (1988) and Visiting Hours (1982) on DVD had me scratching my head. Then I had a “duh” moment – they’re both hospital themed. Bad Dreams much less so than the overt Visiting Hours, but the connection is there to rationalize Shout! Factory plopping two lesser known horror titles onto one disc in a crowded marketplace.
But hey! Bad Dreams gets all the special features while Visiting Hours gets a stock standard theatrical trailer addition? Retro Slashers diagnosis: negative. But ooh, I wouldn’t mind sussing out that original Bad Dreams ending supplement.
Bad Dreams Extras

• New Dolby Digital 5.1 soundtrack
• Interviews with actors Rubin, Lynch, Bruce Abbott and Dean Cameron
• “The Special Effects of Bad Dreams” featurette

• Theatrical trailer
The disc releases on September 13th, and both movies are presented in an anamorphic 1.78:1 widescreen transfer.

You’re right about these two films being odd bedfellows. Bad Dreams has always felt a bit of a B-Side to the Nightmare on Elm Street series (especially with Jennifer Rubin in the lead). Visiting Hours is definitely a bit stronger, due in part to Michael Ironside’s performance.
Michael Ironside is the man. I like just about every movie he is in. He always plays a great villian.
Is Anchor Bay just done w/ movies like this now?
Do these jeans make me look fat?
Both films deserve their own disc with extras. These double feature discs have never been attractive to me, even when I enjoy both films, which is the case here.
Both films received standalone disc releases from Anchor Bay, but unfortunately these are now out of print. This double feature re-release is a viable option for those who missed out the first time around. Along with the upcoming Blu-Ray of Halloween II, this fall looks like the season of the hospital slasher! Now if only someone would put out X-Ray (AKA Hospital Massacre) on DVD.
A shame that VISITING HOURS has never gotten the special edition treatment on DVD.I saw the film in the theater in June (the studio only recently located a print,it had been unavailable in 35mm for years),it holds up rather well.Somewhat above average I would say, good cast too.
I have both movies on their stand alone anchor bay discs but I was looking forward to this, hoping there would he some nice supplements. Guess I will stick with what I have. But both are good movies for those who don’t have them yet. However I have seen these films around some used DVD shops for those who would rather stand alone editions, you should check out used DVD shops around you as it seems people ate selling their old versions for the new releases coming up. I picked up final exam the other day for $9.99. Though I actually still plan on getting the new edition.
I already own both on single discs. Thankfully I picked them up when they first came out. I don’t want them to be on double feature disc in my collection, especially since Visiting Hours deserves its own.
i as well have the single anchor bay discs for both. great films
both of these movies come on their own discs, not one.
